BREAKING NEWS: Nigeria to Re-Open Embassy in North Korea 🇰🇵

In a significant development, Nigeria has announced plans to reopen its embassy in North Korea, marking a major milestone in the country’s diplomatic relations with the Asian nation. This move comes after a two-year hiatus, following the United Nations’ ban on hiring expatriates and professionals from North Korea in 2021.

According to Patrick Imodu Imologome, the Interim Commissioner for Affairs (Chargé D’affaires) of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in North Korea, the decision to reopen the embassy was made during a protocol visit to the Ambassador of Russia, Mategore, in Pyongyang, the North Korean capital.

Nigeria’s diplomatic relations with North Korea have been cordial, despite the UN ban. In 2020, Nigeria even sought North Korea’s help in combating the COVID-19 pandemic, with medical professionals flown in from the Asian country.

However, in 2021, a health professional drew the UN’s attention to Nigeria’s disregard for the UN ban on North Korean labor, leading to a temporary stall in diplomatic relations.

With the plan to reopen the Nigerian Embassy in North Korea, Nigeria will become the second African country after Egypt to maintain a diplomatic presence in North Korea.

This development is significant, as it highlights Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening its diplomatic ties with other nations, despite global challenges and controversies.
