💬 Nigerian-American Professor Dr. Uju Anya Opens Up on Love, Marriage, and Embracing Women
If life were a puzzle, for Dr. Uju Anya, the pieces only began to fit when she stopped forcing them into a shape that didn’t feel right. The Nigerian-American professor recently gave an intimate account of her past marriage, her sexuality, and the personal experiences that shaped her worldview in a candid interview on ‘With Chude’.
👀 Childhood Shadows That Shaped Her
Uju’s story starts long before adulthood. She grew up witnessing a troubled and abusive household. Her father was emotionally neglectful and physically abusive to her mother, publicly humiliating the family. At 10 years old, her mother walked out of the marriage, leaving a young Uju love-starved and emotionally wounded for years.
“These early experiences influenced my perspective on relationships,” she said, noting that they planted the seeds for her eventual embrace of feminism and atheism after moving to the United States.
💔 A Real Marriage That Wasn’t Meant to Last
Despite identifying as bisexual, Uju fell deeply in love with a man and married her ex-husband. She stressed that the marriage was genuine, intentional, and rooted in love.
“When I met my ex-husband, I liked him. He was hot, he could dance, he was funny. I felt sexual attraction, and I held on to him tightly because this felt like my passport to a normal life,” she revealed.
The marriage was sexually fulfilling and emotionally real, yet over time, she realized that her attraction to women was stronger. Around 10 years into the marriage, she had an honest conversation with her husband about needing relationships with women as well.
🔄 Open Marriage and the Turning Point
The couple agreed to open their marriage, dating others while trying to maintain their bond. This arrangement lasted four more years but ultimately couldn’t sustain the marriage.
The turning point came at a Nigerian lesbian wedding in New York, which became a moment of clarity for her:
“My marriage was over at that point. I knew this was my future. I needed to go.”
🌈 Love Beyond Labels
Despite public perception labeling her a “man-hater,” Uju dismissed the notion, explaining that her love for men was real, but her love for women was stronger. She also opened up about facing backlash, threats, and public criticism, including after speaking out on political issues and historical injustices affecting Biafrans.
“The backlash was so intense I had to involve both the police and the FBI. It took a toll on my mental health.”
💍 A New Chapter With Her Dream Woman
In 2024, Uju married Dr. Syria Lang, her long-term partner, describing her as her dream woman. Their union goes beyond love; it’s a blended family and partnership, built on mutual understanding and shared values.
“This marriage is not just about us — it’s about building a family and living authentically,” she said.
