Senate collates data on Nigerians abroad, plans to reverse japa

Nigeria’s Senate Committee on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organisations has sounded the alarm on the growing trend of Nigerians migrating abroad in search of better opportunities, commonly referred to as the “Japa syndrome.” Chaired by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, the committee has vowed to tackle this issue head-on, with a comprehensive plan to strengthen the nation’s economy and reduce mass emigration.

The Alarming Rate of Mass Emigration
The “Japa syndrome” has become a pressing concern in Nigeria, with thousands of citizens fleeing the country in search of greener pastures. This trend has far-reaching implications for Nigeria’s economy, as the country loses its brightest minds and most talented individuals.

A Call to Action: Reversing the Trend
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan emphasized the importance of reversing the trend, stating that “patriotism is earned and not forced.” The committee plans to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to make Nigerians, particularly the youth, believe in their country and resist the temptation to migrate abroad.

Lessons from Other Countries
The committee will draw inspiration from countries like India, Pakistan, and Egypt, which have successfully reversed similar trends by creating attractive opportunities for their citizens. By studying these models, Nigeria hopes to identify strategies to stem the tide of mass emigration.

A Multi-Pronged Approach
The committee’s plan involves several key strategies:

  • Database of Nigerians in Diaspora: The committee will compile a comprehensive database of Nigerians living abroad, country by country.
  • Collaboration with International Organisations: The committee will work with various international organisations to identify areas of focus that can attract Nigerians back home.
  • Economic Empowerment: The committee will explore ways to create economic opportunities and incentives to encourage Nigerians to stay in the country.

As the Senate Committee on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organisations embarks on this ambitious plan, Nigerians can only hope that it marks the beginning of a new era for the country. Will the committee’s efforts be enough to reverse the “Japa syndrome” and stem the tide of mass emigration? Only time will tell.
