Ex-Petroleum Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke Appears in UK Court Ahead of Corruption Trial

Former Nigerian Minister of Petroleum Resources and ex-OPEC President Diezani Alison-Madueke has appeared before a London court, marking the start of preliminary proceedings ahead of her long-awaited corruption trial in the United Kingdom.

According to reports, Alison-Madueke attended court on Monday as technical hearings and jury selection began. The former minister, who served in office between 2010 and 2015, has been on bail since her arrest in October 2015 and has consistently denied all allegations against her.

The 65-year-old made history during her tenure as Nigeria’s first female petroleum minister and the first woman to serve as President of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). However, her legacy has since been overshadowed by allegations of large-scale bribery linked to oil contracts awarded during her time in office.

In 2023, the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) formally charged Alison-Madueke with six counts of bribery, alleging that she accepted illicit financial rewards between 2011 and 2015.

“We suspect Diezani Alison-Madueke abused her power in Nigeria and accepted financial rewards for awarding multi-million-pound contracts,” the NCA said at the time.

Prosecutors allege that the former minister benefitted from at least £100,000 in cash, chauffeur-driven vehicles, private jet flights, and the use of several London properties. The indictment also lists luxury benefits such as high-end furniture, property renovations, private school fees, household staff, and designer gifts from brands including Louis Vuitton.

Two other individuals — Doye Agama and Olatimbo Ayinde — are also facing related bribery charges. Agama appeared in court via video link, while Ayinde was physically present in the dock.

Alison-Madueke’s full trial is scheduled to begin on Monday, January 26, and is expected to last between 10 and 12 weeks, potentially marking one of the most high-profile corruption cases involving a former Nigerian government official in recent history.
