The Federal Government has officially launched the National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System through the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), a significant step towards building a Nigeria where your location connects you to more possibilities.
Announced by the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, the system assigns a unique 11-character alphanumeric code to every addressable building in Nigeria. It is designed to tackle an estimated ₦50bn – ₦80bn lost annually to missed and failed deliveries.
Why It Matters: More Than Just Deliveries
As Minister Tijani stated: “For a country to work efficiently, we need to be able to answer one very basic question. Where?”
This new infrastructure goes beyond e-commerce. It is built to power:
- Small Businesses: Ready to deliver beyond their neighbourhood without phone directions.
- Emergency Response: Families waiting for help can share an accurate postcode, not landmarks.
- Government & Security: Agencies can reach communities with essential services, health, and planning.
- $1 Trillion Economy Goal: A foundational layer for H.E. President Bola Tinubu’s ambition to allow more Nigerians to participate, trade and prosper.
How The New Digital Postcode Works

Unlike the old 6-digit numeric postcode from 1986 that only covered broad areas, the new system is GIS-enabled and building-specific. The code remains with the building, not the occupant.
Each postcode is structured across 5 levels:
Full Code Example: FC02-D64-LV01 (as seen held by the Minister’s office). You can find yours at postcode.gov.ng. If your building isn’t on the portal yet, you can submit your GPS or Google Maps link for NIPOST verification.
NIPOST Is Building The Spatial Layer For Nigeria
According to Postmaster-General Tola Odeyemi, NIPOST is integrating this postcode layer across all federal MDAs and state governments. While digital identity tells us who a citizen is and payment rails move value, this system solves where public health facilities, road repairs, and social interventions are actually needed.
This places Nigeria alongside global models like India’s DIGIPIN, Ghana’s Digital Address System, and what3words – but as national digital public infrastructure “built by Nigerians, for Nigerians.”
