Nigerian Teacher Seyi Anifowose Sets Guinness World Record with Largest Teachers’ Gathering
In a landmark achievement that puts Nigeria’s education sector on the global map, Mr. Seyi Anifowose, a teacher and education advocate, has officially entered the Guinness World Records for convening the largest gathering of teachers in history.
The record-setting event, known as the Let There Be Teachers Conference 2025, was held on September 20 at Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos — the same historic venue where Nigeria declared independence in 1960. Organised in partnership with 1 Million Teachers, the conference drew tens of thousands of educators from across the country, making it a moment of both national pride and global recognition.
Confirmation of the feat came on September 23, via Zoom, from Rishi Nath, a Guinness World Records representative, who praised Anifowose and his team for spotlighting an issue “that should be on the front burner of policy and dialogue nationally.”
More Than Just Numbers
While organisers had projected 60,000 teachers in attendance, the significance went far beyond statistics. For Anifowose, the milestone is a testament to resilience and the value of teachers in nation-building.
“This is more than a record. It is proof that teachers matter. It is a victory for education, and it is a victory for Nigeria,” Anifowose declared.
The symbolic choice of Tafawa Balewa Square underscored the event’s weight: a gathering that reframed independence as not just political freedom, but also the empowerment of those who shape the future in classrooms.
Challenges and Triumphs
The journey to this achievement was not without hurdles. Teachers stood under the rain, braved scorching sun, and endured long verification queues. Yet, they persisted.
“This was not just about breaking a record. It was about resilience,” Anifowose explained. “The teachers refused to give up because they wanted to prove that our profession matters.”
Gratitude was extended to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State for hosting the event, and Governor Abiodun Oyebanji of Ekiti State for his support, alongside teacher unions and education agencies nationwide.
Why This Matters for Nigeria’s Education Sector
Nigeria faces one of the world’s toughest education challenges. According to UNESCO, the country grapples with a severe teacher shortage, underfunded schools, poor infrastructure, and low morale among educators. Many classrooms remain overcrowded, while teachers are underpaid and undervalued.
By achieving this Guinness World Record, Anifowose has transformed symbolic recognition into a rallying call for reform. His next step, he revealed, is to engage the National Assembly on policies that will improve teachers’ welfare, professional training, and working conditions.
“This is just the beginning,” he noted. “Teachers deserve better, and Nigeria deserves a stronger education system.”
A Victory for Teachers, A Lesson for the World
The Let There Be Teachers Conference is more than a celebration. It’s a movement — one that emphasizes that teachers are the bedrock of society, deserving of recognition, investment, and dignity.
As the world takes note of this record, the message from Lagos is clear: Nigeria is ready to lead not just in music, film, and sports, but also in education advocacy.
