Nigeria’s Alex Iwobi Stars as Fulham Fight Back to Beat Brentford 3-1

Saturday, 20 September 2025 | Premier League – Fulham 3, Brentford 1

Fulham’s dynamic display at Craven Cottage saw them overturn an early deficit to defeat Brentford 3-1, thanks to a sensational performance by Nigeria international Alex Iwobi, who scored and assisted in what could easily be described as a masterclass in Premier League poise and precision. The victory marks Fulham’s second win of the 2025/26 season, lifting them to seventh in the table, while Brentford slip to 17th following a frustrating afternoon in west London.

Match Highlights: Fulham’s Resurgence

Brentford started brightly, with Mikkel Damsgaard capitalizing on a misdirected pass from Josh King in the 20th minute to give the visitors an early lead. However, Fulham quickly responded. Alex Iwobi equalized eight minutes later after Sasa Lukic’s shot fell kindly, showcasing his clinical awareness and positioning.

Just two minutes after the equalizer, Iwobi’s vision was on full display as he threaded a precise pass to Harry Wilson, who made no mistake in putting Fulham ahead. The second half continued Fulham’s dominance, with Ethan Pinnockdeflecting a cross into his own net in the 50th minute, effectively sealing the game for the home side. Rodrigo Muniz’s spectacular effort was ruled out by VAR following a collision, but the result was never in doubt.

Alex Iwobi: The Star of the Show

Iwobi’s performance highlighted why Nigerian footballers continue to shine on the global stage. The former Everton man demonstrated not only goal-scoring ability but also an exceptional footballing IQ, linking up with Ryan Sessegnon on the left and creating space for Fulham’s attacking threat.

“For just the second time in his Premier League career, Alex Iwobi scored and assisted in the same match,” noted BBC Sport.

His influence extended beyond stats, inspiring Fulham’s tactical shift under Marco Silva, whose adjustments neutralized Brentford’s attacking threat and maximized Fulham’s transition play.

Brentford Analysis: A Team in Transition

For Brentford, the loss reflects the growing pains under new manager Keith Andrews. Despite a promising start, the Bees have now lost eight points from winning positions this season, highlighting concerns over defensive resilience and maintaining leads. With upcoming matches against Manchester United, Liverpool, and Manchester City, Andrews’ side faces a challenging run in the Premier League.

What’s Next for Fulham and Brentford?

• Fulham: Host Cambridge United in the Carabao Cup (23 Sept) and travel to Aston Villa in the Premier League (28 Sept).

• Brentford: Host Manchester United on 27 September in a crucial league fixture.
