Why Wizkid shouldn’t compare himself with Fela – Daddy Freeze
Media personality Daddy Freeze has weighed in on the ongoing debate comparing Afrobeats star Wizkid with late Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, insisting that the comparison is misplaced.
His comments come amid the recent clash between Wizkid and Seun Kuti, Fela’s son, which was sparked by fans drawing parallels between the global music star and the iconic activist-musician.
The tension began after Seun Kuti called out Wizkid’s fans for what he described as disrespectful comparisons between his father and Wizkid. In response, Wizkid reportedly fired back, suggesting he was “far better” than Fela, a remark that further fueled the controversy online.
Reacting to the exchange, Daddy Freeze argued that Wizkid and Fela operated on entirely different planes and should not be compared.
According to him, while Wizkid is undeniably successful and influential in contemporary music, Fela’s legacy went far beyond entertainment. He noted that Fela was not just a musician but a revolutionary figure whose impact spanned politics, culture, and social consciousness in Nigeria and across Africa.
Daddy Freeze stressed that Fela’s contributions were rooted in activism and resistance against oppression, making his influence deeper and more far-reaching than modern-day celebrity success.
He concluded by advising Wizkid and his fans to appreciate Fela’s historical significance without attempting to measure it against today’s music industry achievements, emphasizing that both artists belong to very different eras with very different missions.
