When rising costs, dreary weather, and heavy taxation make everyday life feel restrictive, some take bold steps to rewrite their story. Yvonne Akpofure, 29, a British Nigerian lawyer and self-published author, made one such decision by leaving the UK to start anew in Doha, Qatar, and she says life has never been better.
From Manchester to Doha: Why She Made the Leap

Fed up with the UK’s rainy climate and mounting financial pressure, Yvonne decided to explore opportunities in the Middle East. Initially drawn to Dubai, she found the city “saturated” with competition and widened her search to Qatar—a fast-growing hub with a thriving expat community.
After a brief visit, she fell in love with Doha’s sunny weather, lifestyle, and tax-free income. By September 2024, Yvonne had relocated with a secure position at a local law firm, marking the start of her Middle Eastern chapter.
“I thought, ‘I’ll never do it if I don’t do it now.’ The worst that could happen was I’d move, and if I didn’t like it, I could always come back,” she said.
Overcoming Early Challenges

The first six months proved challenging. Adapting to cultural differences, a new work style, and navigating a city where English isn’t the first language for everyone tested her resilience. Making friends was initially difficult, but social media connections, networking events, and joining a run club helped her establish a strong social circle.
“That first six months was a character-building experience. Once you push past it, life becomes a lot easier,” Yvonne reflected.
Life in Qatar vs. the UK

Yvonne highlights several key advantages of living in Doha:
Weather & Lifestyle: Sun-filled days allow for outdoor activities year-round.
Financial Freedom: No personal income tax and lower rent compared to UK cities. Her one-bedroom apartment in a premium area costs 10,000 QAR (~£2,000) with bills included, providing more disposable income.
Healthcare: Employers provide private healthcare, and same-day appointments are common—an efficiency contrast to UK waiting lists.
Real Estate Flexibility: Apartment rentals are plentiful, with a simplified process compared to the competitive UK property market.
“For the same cost in Manchester or London, you’d struggle to get an apartment this size or quality. Here, you get far more for your money,” she says.
A New Career & Creative Ventures

Beyond law, Yvonne recently published her debut memoir, ‘Wine, Weekends and What Came After’, chronicling her experiences with modern dating, friendship, and personal growth. Her book has already garnered positive reception, with many readers appreciating her relatable and humorous storytelling.
“The book goes through my journey from university to my mid-20s. There are ups and downs, but it’s written in a way that many women can relate to,” she explains.
